American India Foundation’s Houston Chapter

From Benita Mahanta:

My name is Benita Mahanta, and I am a board member of the newly formed Houston chapter of American India Foundation (AIF), a non-profit organization based in New York, California, and Delhi and founded in 2001 by former President Bill Clinton and former Prime Minister of India Atal Bihari Vajpayee after the 2001 earthquake in India’s state of Gujarat. AIF’s mission is to catalyze social and economic change in India, with a focus on public health, livelihoods, and education. The AIF Houston Chapter’s first event will take place May 16th, with a panel discussion on how innovative programs and cross-sector partnerships are impacting digital access in schools and improving maternal health in India.

As Shunya Theatre may have an interest in these topics, I invite your staff and performers to attend! If possible, would you be able to distribute the information on this event to interested parties within your network on our behalf, as well? Below is the event information for your reference.

The Waiting Room Returns!

Dear Friends,

In late August Shunya was in the final rehearsal for our production of Tanika Gupta’s wonderful play “The Waiting Room” and anxiously following the weather reports as Hurricane Harvey approached. You know the next part of that story: Houston was devastated and most of the city shut down. We made the decision to cancel the remainder of the run of the production after our opening night and reschedule. I’m happy to say we will be carrying on with the production October 26-29, 2017.

Shunya is an all-volunteer troupe, and we, like many small theatre groups in Houston, operate on a shoestring budget. The cancellations have affected us seriously and has essentially wiped out our budget. We only have one week to make up what would have been a two-week run, so I urge you to come out to see the production.

To give as much of an opportunity as possible, we will be packing 5 shows into 4 days: evening shows on Thursday and Friday, a matinee and evening show on Saturday, and a matinee on Sunday.

You can donate to Shunya by buying a ticket here, or by the donation button here.
See you at the show!

Sanjay

Cancellation of all remaining performances of The Waiting Room

In light of the ongoing weather catastrophe, we are cancelling all remaining performances of The Waiting Room this week. We are looking into rescheduling in October 2017.

If you have tickets please contact the MATCH at boxoffice@matchouston.org or 713-521-4533 or just reply to the confirmation email you received from the MATCH. Leave a message if you get the MATCH voicemail.

In the wake of Harvey

American Theatre article about the effect of Hurricane Harvey on Houston theatre companies: http://www.americantheatre.org/2017/08/28/houston-theatres-survey-the-damage/

As those of you who follow Shunya know we had our opening weekend of Tanika Gupta’s “The Waiting Room” interrupted. With the continued rain we are waiting to see what we can try to salvage this upcoming weekend.

The Waiting Room Weather Update

The Waiting Room will still have its opening night performance TONIGHT on Friday 8/25/17. Because of the incoming hurricane we have cancelled our Saturday 8/26/17 and Sunday 8/27/17 performances. If you have tickets for one of these performance, or if you need to change your tickets because of the weather please contact the MATCH at boxoffice@matchouston.org or 713-521-4533 or just reply to the confirmation email you received from the MATCH. Leave a message if you get the MATCH voicemail.

If you want to see the production, please come out tonight!
