Actors will receive a stipend dependent on the size of the role.

The play will be produced by Paragon Arts (www.paragon-arts.org) in collaboration with the University of St. Thomas Center for Faith and Culture from May 4th – May 20th, 2012 at Obsidian Arts Space in the Heights.  Rehearsals begin March 19th.

 

Characters

 

Note that some parts may be double cast.

Magdalene:  A poet.  In the second scene, a younger actress aged 9 to 13.  For the remainder of the play, a woman in her mid to late twenties.

Martha:  Sister to Lazarus, Magdalene, and Silent Mary, thirties to forties.

Lazarus:  Brother to Martha, Magdalene, and Silent Mary, late thirties to forties.

Silent Mary:  Sister to Lazarus, Magdalene, and Martha, late teens to early twenties.

Devil:  A magnificent dancer (has no lines but must be a trained dancer)

Marketman:  A salesman, forties to sixties

Nurse:  Magdalene’s nurse maid, fifties

Miriam:  A young girl with one leg aged 8 to 12.

Elhanan:  A centurion.  In the second scene, he is 14 years old.  For the remainder of the play, late-twenties to thirties.

Shamir:  Elhanan’s younger brother, a soldier, twenties.

Adin:  A soldier.  In the second scene, he is 11 years old.  For the remainder of the play, twenties.

Doron:  A soldier, twenties to thirties.

Jesus:  The Messiah, called Rabbi by his followers, thirties.

James:  Apostle of Jesus, brother of John, thirties.

John:  Apostle of Jesus, brother of James, thirties.

Judas:  Apostle of Jesus, thirties.

Mary:  Mother of Jesus, late forties to fifties.

Mary of Suphan:  A holy woman, forties.

Dina:  A holy woman, forties.

Simon Zabulon:  A pharisee, forties.

Encore Performance of Karol Wojtyla’s The Jeweler’s Shop 1/14/2012

Shunya’s first play reading of 2012 on Friday Jan 6th. Join us!

We’ll be kicking off the new year with an informal play reading on Jan 6th, 2012 at 6:30 pm. We meet about monthly to read new plays, and everyone is welcome. Backspace plays at Fitzgerald’s, Mandar on tabla

Shunya’s own Mandar Sane (multiple music composition and performance credits, actor in Bricks and Lyrics) will be playing tabla for the song Within You Without You during Backspace’s December 29 show at Fitzgerald’s. The band is going to cover tunes from the Beatles and the Kinks. The show starts at 7pm, tickets are $15, and the proceeds go to charity.

Call for one act scripts from Yatraa Theatre in the Bay Area

Raj Ray of Yatraa is looking for scripts for a potential production at the Bay Area Bengali Theater Festival in Feb 2012. Sara Kumar acting in “The Jeweler’s Shop”

Shunya’s co-Artistic Director, Sara Kumar, will be acting in a production of “The Jeweler’s Shop” by Karol Wojtyla (the name of John Paul II before he became Pope). The production is at Obsidian Art Space November 4, 5 and 6.

Casting Call for Rajiv Joseph’s Animals Out of Paper

Shona Strauser of Perseverance Theatre in Juneau, Alaska sends this casting call. The actor can be older than 17, but must look young:

Perseverance Theatre seeks actors to audition for the mainstage role of Suresh in Rajiv Joseph’s Animals Out of Paper.

Suresh is a 17-year-old East Indian student, raised in the U.S. He’s sensitive, intelligent, artistic and confident. He’s into hip hop and origami.
